RKVY Training Programme on Black Pepper and Cardamom Cultivation at ICAR-IISR RS, Appangala

ICAR – Indian Institute of Spices Research, Regional Station, Appangala, Madikeri, organised an RKVY-sponsored one-day farmer training programme on "Production of Quality Planting Material and Sustainable Cultivation of Black Pepper and Cardamom" on August 13, 2026.

The programme was inaugurated by Sh. Venkata Reddy Y B, Deputy Director (Extension), Coffee Board, Madikeri. Dr. Akshitha H J, Senior Scientist, welcomed the gathering. Dr. G A Rajanna, Senior Scientist and Head, ICAR-IISR RS, Appangala, presided over the function and outlined the export potential of Indian spices, stressing the importance of improved varieties, soil testing, nutrient management, pest and disease management and spice processing.

The technical sessions covered: improved varieties of black pepper and cardamom by Dr. Shivakumar M S; production of quality planting material and nursery management by Dr. Honnappa Asangi; sustainable cultivation practices by Dr. S J Ankegowda; and integrated pest and disease management by Dr. Biju C N.

The sessions were followed by a Research–Extension–Farmers interface meeting, and an exhibition of ICAR-IISR varieties and technologies was arranged for the participants. A total of 105 farmers from Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, Mysuru, Tumakuru, Chikkamagaluru, Bengaluru, Hassan, Davanagere and Chitradurga districts of Karnataka attended.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Gayathri G N, Scientist, ICAR-IISR RS, Appangala.

 

The programme successfully equipped farmers from across Karnataka with knowledge and skills on sustainable black pepper and cardamom cultivation, promoting the adoption of ICAR-IISR technologies for improved productivity and quality.
