Biocapsules - Microbial Encapsulation Technology
A novel encapsulation technology for storing and delivering beneficial microorganisms has been developed by ICAR-IISR. The technology involves encapsulation of microorganisms of interest in a 1 g gelatin capsule for delivery to crops. The encapsulation technology was successfully field tested and commercialized in 2013–14. The novel encapsulation technology has been licensed to several firms for production of encapsulated microorganisms for use in agriculture.
The process involves encapsulating the isolate of beneficial microorganism, protecting agent, buffering agent, essential nutrients, and bulking agent packed in a gelatin capsule. The mixture with beneficial microbial population of 109–1012 CFU/g is packed in the capsule. It can be diluted to 200 litres prior to use. Any microbes used in agriculture can be encapsulated using this technology.
