KVK, Peruvannamuzhi & IISR, Kozhikode in association with Kavunthara Service Cooperative Bank,Naduvannur celebrated World Soil Day. The programme was inaugurated by Sri. Purushan Kadalundi, MLA, Balussery and he also distributed soil health cards to 30 farmers of Naduvannur Panchayat. He stressed the convergence of agricultural schemes and ensure supply of quality seeds and seedlings along with the soil health card to improve the productivity. The programme was presided by Dr. P. Ratha Krishnan, Programme Coordinator, KVK, Peruvannamuzhi and welcome by Sri. Sasi Koloth, President, Kavunthara Service Cooperative Bank. Dr. V. Srinivasan, Principal Scientist, IISR, Kozhikode delivered expert talk on ‘ Soil health management’. Dr. R. Dinesh, Principal Scientist, IISR, Kozhikode and Sri. N. Shibeesh, Nanma Gents SHG, Naduvannur delivered felicitations.
In connection with the celebration of World Soil Day an oncampus training on ‘Vegetable, banana and coconut cultivation’ was conducted by Dr. P.S. Manoj, Subject Matter Specialist and Dr. Maria Dainy, M.S., Programme Assistant at KVK, Peruvannamuzhi. Smt. A.C. Sathi, Block Panchayat President, Perambra distributed 30 soil health cards to farmers of Maruthonkara Panchayat. She also distributed seeds and seedlings to the students of St. Mary’s High School, Maruthonkara and Msgr. Raymond Memorial Public School, Chempanoda for establish vegetable garden at their schools. These programmes were participated by 200 persons including farmers, students, teachers, bank officials and Scientists. At the end Dr. T.K. Jacob, Principal Scientist & Scientist-in-Charge, IISR Experimental Farm, Peruvannamuzhi delivered vote of thanks.
Silver Jubilee of its establishment
On 12th February, 2018 Shri. Mullappalli Ramachandran Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Vadakara is inaugurated Silver Jubilee of establishment. The event organized with a technology week to showcase latest agricultural technologies and sale of inputs like seeds, bio-control agents, etc. This week long celebration included exhibition of stalls by government departments, research institutes and service cooperative banks, progressive farmers, etc. In addition, six days Friends of Coconut training sponsored by Coconut Development Board; DASD sponsored training on Spices production and processing technology; Field day on ginger at Naduvannur; Seminar on Ethno veterinary medicine in dairy animal and poultry farming, Trainings on Aquaponics and ornamental fish culture; IPDM in Spices and Vegetables; nursery management and propagation of plants were also conducted on each day.
During the period, the Kendra declared open day for farmers and school students to visit the demonstration units and learn about the Bush pepper production, compost making, bee keeping, aqua-phonics, Cage system of poultry rearing, Hydrophoic fodder production, Wick irrigation, Grow bag and vertical farming of vegetables, spices; soil and water quality testing, ornamental fish cultivation, etc.
Crop Insurance and diversification of farm enterprises are critical component for securing and enhancing farm income in rural areas, said Sri, M K Raghavan, Honourable Member of Parliament, Kozhikode. He was inaugurating ‘Sankalp Se siddhi’ –Determination to Attainment, programme organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kozhikode at ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research on 25th August 2017. He also emphasised on the need for equipping farmers with good quality seed, organic fertilisers, and irrigation facilities to increase the farmer income. He said a target oriented strategy has to be planned at Panchayath level for higher production of vegetables, egg, milk and allied products. The farmers took a pledge to adopt sustainable, scientific and socially desirable practices to ensure fast development and progress of the nation. Shri. Babu Parassery, District Panchyath President and addressed Shri. Pradeep Kumar, MLA Kozhikode North addressed the farmer gathering organized as part of the programme. Shri. Babu Parassery exhorted the farmers to target higher income e through value addition and direct marketing. Sri Pradeep Kumar said that institutions like IISR and KVK should take greater role in highlighting key issues of farmers. Smt. S Subha Deputy Project Director, ATMA, Kozhikode gave felicitation address.
Dr. K. Nirmal Babu, Director, ICAR-IISR, Kozhikode welcomed the gathering. Dr. Santhosh J Eapen, Head crop protection Division elaborated the Sankalp Se siddhi seven point programme for doubling farmers income by 2022. The programme envisages to double income of farmers by providing better irrigation facilities, ensuring high quality of planting material, enhancing availability of organic inputs, Practicing soil test based fertilizer application and minimising post harvest losses. Value addition and enhanced market facilities should also form critical components in the quest for achieving the target of doubling farmers income by 2022. A video documentary was shown on the programmes taken up by Central Govt. for the welfare of farmers. Successful farm models and farming ventures were presented to the participants by Dr. B Sasikumar, Head, Crop Improvement and Biotechnology Division of ICAR IISR. Dr. Sheeja, Principal Scientist sensitized the farmer participants on the immense economic potential of commercialization of agricultural and allied technologies. Dr. P. Ratha Krishnan, Programme co-ordinator, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kozhikode presented the vote of thanks. An exhibition on technological inputs developed by ICAR-IISR and value added products of self help groups were also held. The programme was attended by about 500 people.
