Director, Dr. K Nirmal Babu, ICAR-IISR Superannuates
Dr. K Nirmal Babu, Director, ICAR Indian Institute of Spices Research, Kozhikode retired from the service (31st May 2020) of Indian Council of Agricultural Research, after an illustrious career spanning more than 35 years. Dr. Babu, a leading figure in the spice research field was also heading the All India Coordinated Research Project on Spices since 2012. Right from the start of his career as a scientist, he was associated with Indian Institute of Spices Research. Dr. Nirmal Babu has made significant contributions to genetic resource management, varietal development and biotechnological applications in spice crops.
He was associated with the development of 12 spice crop varieties and has reported two new species. He pioneered the development and standardization of micro-propagation protocols for 40 spices and aromatic crops. Dr. Babu played a key role in the establishment of the world collection of black pepper germplasm at IISR. A recipient of prestigious awards like Jawaharlal Nehru Award and ICAR Team Research Award, he has guided 34 research scholars and has more than 300 research publications to his credit.
